The interface is quite simple. The catch is bidding a higher price for the flight than others. See, all airlines have a certain number of seats on their airplanes that will be empty on flights. To minimize this, they are willing to "give up" their regular commision in order to make the most money and to fill their flights up as best as possible.
Here's how to get the best price

Using the interface I provided on this page, feel free to search the flight of your choice. Then, on a separate page, open travelocity.com, check the lowest price for your travel itinerary. Jot it down on a piece of paper. Then, go to orbitz.com and do the same. Do the same with Expedia.com. Do it for at least 3 sites. Then get an average for all the sites. Suppose the individual prices are as follows:
Site 1: $320
Site 2: $367
Site 3: $295
Get an average price by adding all of the prices and dividing by the number of quotes you found, in this case it is 3. So, 982 divided by 3. gives us $327.33. That's the average price. Now, according to many experts in online booking, the best price on Hotwire usually is 30-32% discount. So you'll bid for the seat that fits your itinerary at at least a 30% discount. In this case 30% of the average price, $327.33 is: $229.13. That will be your bid. You'll likely succeed in getting an airline to accept your bid at about $230. In slow seasons you can try increasing the percentage discount for your bid.
So, why wait? Check it out now. You must be ready to make a reservation when using Hotwire, as you will not know the airline that will accept your bid at which point your credit card will be billed and you will be sent an e-ticket with the travel details including the airline that accepted the bid. Indeed you are doing approximately the same as a consolidator does. A consolidator buys a number of seats expected to be empty on any given flight and resells them for a nice profit.
Why don't you bookmark this blog by adding it to your favorites and book your flights directly from this interface. After all, booking from this blog takes you to the site automatically but you have a chance to check out the newest secrets on travel that I've found to date before booking.
